Has he done a defensive/advanced driving course. That is the best money you can spend on your kid when he starts driving: learn to recognise the threat and be able to deal any consequences of the avoiding action or just how to react when learning to carry speed through a corner.
My dad took me to an accident avoidance course at Summit Point when I was 16 or 17... it was a great experience for both of us and gave me a lot more confidence on the road. Of course sometimes TOO MUCH confidence
Of course if you do this, you will curse him with knowledge for the rest of his life, as he's stuck in traffic watching mouth breathers following window lickers and--much more frequently for him--automated vehicles mostly clogging the road, only driving at 10% of their vehicles' performance and taking 45mph turns at 35mph instead of 60+
