So Mark , the plan is to loose the brake booster completely ? As per race car ? This is because you don't have enough vacuum ?
yes, yes, and yes.
A stock 308 QV idles with 18-20" vacuum and boosters typically need about 15+ to operate properly so all is well. I expect about 8-10" vacuum at idle so that's not going to work.
On deceleration I'll pull that much vacuum so I could charge the system and maybe add a reservoir and end up with a system that gives me 2-3 brake taps at the redlight or in the parking lot before the power fails...so that would just suck.
I could add an electric vacuum pump to the system and it would work but comes with the sound of s vacuum pump running plus weight and if the pump or the wires or the pressure switch or the relay fails so do the brakes so it's not ideal.
Then I remembered my 1965 corvette with big 4 wheel disc brakes and no power brakes. When I first drove it I knew it was manual brakes so I stomped on the brake pedal...and nearly went through the windshield. The brakes in that car were GREAT! I've done a bunch or reading recently and universally when the people with big cams and no vacuum convert to manual brakes they are happy and wonder why they ever even tried messing with power brakes because they have exactly the same experience I had with my '65 vette....manual brakes work great on a 3200lb car.
I may need to play with the pedal ratio a bit...I'm not sure. I just went up to a 1" bore master to get enough volume for the calipers....maybe. 1 1/8" bore is the standard answer for 4 wheel discs but the stock ferrari master is 7/8" I think but a couple 308 owners have reported switching to big calipers and the fiat 1" master with no problems so I think it has enough volume...but they were still running the booster so I'm not sure I'll have the ration right. We'll see.
