I had to fix and clean up the Jetta for Craig's list....hopefully it will be out of my life forever soon.

But this afternoon I Got the TBs installed. It took some thinking time over the past few days to figure out how to get them in place and it's definately a "WTF was the engineer thinking!" setup......but it fits and looks neat so......hopefully nothing leaks!

I've done a powertrain-out torque converter replacement on my Ex's 2002 C5 A6. I had to think really hard about whether the 3.0 V6 would go back in or if I'd go find a W12.

DO they make hp? I keep thinking about doing a project with one but haven't dug around enough to know what I'd be in for to get decent hp out of it......and I'd prefer not to lean the hard way like I did on this project :)

The wet sump VW version in the Phaeton is 400 HP, the dry sump version in the Audi A8 is 450 HP. *YOU* would probably have to fab in intake manifold and headers from scratch. From the pics I've seen, it's like a VR6 in that it has short and long ports on both sides of the head... to get equal length runners, the difference in port length has to be compensated in the intake tract or header primaries. VW/Audi does not, to my knowledge, do that.
I have no idea how well the heads flow or what (if any) cams are available.

All of the "VR" style engines (VR6, W8, W12, W16) have the bores intersecting the deck surface at an angle. This leads to angled piston crowns and very wide top ring lands... *NOT* great for a well-tuned engine. I'm amazed they can pass emissions regulations with those mutants.

Here's a reasonably good shot of what I'm talking about:

The Bentley versions are twin turbo and 550-650+ HP.

Nothing like a set of ITB's to really set off an engine......especially when there's 12 of 'em!!!!

I forget, are you going to have them breathing through a common airbox with dual intakes and a pair of MAF's, or are you going to try it with a MAP sensor?

It is great to see a broader view of the entire engine bay. Wow! It all looks impressively 'compact' and tidy. Cool that you've retained the entire stock trunk.

Also love the photo with the wrench: looks like Ferrari's standard construction design.

I need to get stack on them...then it will be spectacular :)

No MAFs. I'm going to see what I get with just MAP first. In the pics you can see there is a vacuum line to each runner and they will each connect to individual MAP sensors on a circuit board design to send the lowest pressure to the ECU as the true maps signal so I will have the best MAP possible. If that has issues I'll go to alpha-n or blend of MAP and alpha-n like the sport bikes use.

The air box is still a bit of a wild card. The original plan was a common box with 2 inlets and a pair of OEM QV filter boxes.....but the filter boxes didn't really fit and I'd like to quadrant to air box to the get 4 groups of 3 cylinders to allow the air box to become a Helmholtz chamber which should add 5%-10% more hp.....but I'll deal with all this once it's running.

I just got my 2 banks of 'Busa ITB's back from having stacks pressed on and they look like pure engine porn :)

I'll get them mounted on the manifold tomorrow just for mockup and will post pics. The manifold came out really well - I brought it to a nearby hotrod resto shop and they hit it with some coarse garnet and the new pipe runners that you welded on blended right in with the cast finish.

You might be on to something here - cut the motor in half and add 4 more cylinders and you've got yourself a Veyron motor - add some hair dryers and they make 1000hp!

Piece of cake for you, done in a weekend..

Thanks and I was thinking the same thing on needing something to drive :)

SO I've been pondering what to do with the coils. and I think I've settled on mounting them to the firewall just above the front cam cover. They need a lot of space and I still need to find room for cold air feeds so this seems the best option.....as long as they don't fry from the heat coming off the headers.

This of course means I don't need the 5mm plug wires I bought as it with no be 3 going each way instead of 6 in in one direction so there is no space issue......but I have them so for now I guess I'll keep them.

Now I just need to figure out how to actually mount them where I'm thinking.
