Has he done a defensive/advanced driving course. That is the best money you can spend on your kid when he starts driving: learn to recognise the threat and be able to deal any consequences of the avoiding action or just how to react when learning to carry speed through a corner.

My dad took me to an accident avoidance course at Summit Point when I was 16 or 17... it was a great experience for both of us and gave me a lot more confidence on the road. Of course sometimes TOO MUCH confidence

Of course if you do this, you will curse him with knowledge for the rest of his life, as he's stuck in traffic watching mouth breathers following window lickers and--much more frequently for him--automated vehicles mostly clogging the road, only driving at 10% of their vehicles' performance and taking 45mph turns at 35mph instead of 60+

I thought those classes for some time with BMWs. Always interesting to see how the young people drive and what they thing about cars today. It was usually very eye opening for the students. Most came away with a better understanding of what they need to do to be safe.

Come on, I've been waiting 16 years to buy a sportscar for a 16 year old!

Haha, since my first kid was born, I've been window shopping for an I4 CBR250RR with an 18k redline "because there won't be any left if he decides he wants one when he's old enough". It ALMOST sounds reasonable, right? RIGHT?

The good news is that I'm too old and fat to ride one, so that's stopped me from picking one up "for the kids to have later".

Back in the 90s I came very close to buying a gray market 250cc 2 stroke, basically a street legal 250GP bike. Ended up with a plain US market 600 as it was 1/3 less money and more hp....just not as cool.

Not as cool to think about, but almost certainly much cooler to actually live with and ride day-to-day.

But on the topic of cool 2-strokes, have you heard about The Langen?

Just so you now I am in fact still alive. I'm supposed to be refinishing the floors but we decided to move the gas fire place to a different wall, then found a guy selling stone pretty cheap so repair the trailer and go get 3 loads 2 hours away, and put as window where the fire place was which lead to find some flashing issues with the old windows causing damage in the wall so even though we moved the furniture out of 1/2 the 1st floor the first week of Oct no floor sanding has occurred. Today I'm putting the 1st coat of stucco over the now repaired wall.

I almost pulled the engine tonight but the ram on the lift died. Harbor Freight has one I could gab tomorrow but amazon will bring to to me Tuesday for $10 less. Pull the engine Wednesday I guess.

All of my project cars are running. Dune Buggy is making great power and sounds so cool. No need to drive that, is freezing. Stella, the wife's 69 C10 pickup has heat and AC and starts every time. 74 Camaro is driving and does burn outs at will. So what to do. Wellll, I am going to pull the Camaro engine and swap on a better set of heads. Then the heads from the Camaro will go on a 357ci short block I built in 1986 with a different cam and that will go into Stella the C10. Wife and I both get an upgrade. Stella has a 1982 Z28 305ci small block. It runs well but 145 hp just only does so much. The 357 should easily be 375 hp. The Camaro has a 383 with a hydraulic roller cam and will upgrade to bigger AFR heads, should be around 500 hp.

And I want to start a walk in shower to replace a garden tub. Big plans a foot.

We just can't leave stuff alone.
