If it is a three jaw lathe chuck, they are somewhat iffy on close tolerance like that.
For valves that small I use a collet chuck. I have to index the collet holder and then I can easily repeat while changing valves.
It is the only way to go with very small stems.

I used the collet in the mill spindle. My lathe 3-jaw is awful, like 5 or 10 thou on most things so anything I care about goes in the 4 jaw or a collect but even the collect chuck is something I rigged up so I think its 1 thou runout.....hence the mill.

I don't thing the stem is straight on even the new valve I grabbed....I think I'm going to setup something with v blocks or make something to check them and go from there. I didn't find ferrari specs for this but some motorcylce specs I found are .0020 on the stem and .0012 on the valve head but I'll maybe do a little more digging. I guess if the stem spec is .002 then just a flat plate and a 001 feller gauge would do it for a good/bad check but an indicator is a lot nicer.

I see. That is a good way to do it. V block would let you know too. I guess I have to start checking to see how straight my valves are now. :?

I recall you once mentioning that the bearings in your lathe were shot. Did you ever rebuild it?

The bed is shot, everything else worn.....its on the need to be replaced when there is budget that is unaccounted for....should that day ever come.

I noticed that on 3/27 there were 415 people on line here.....WTF? 415? the normal number is 1....or 2......the forum must have been linked somewhere.

Or crawled by Google? I didn't think anyone could see any topic without logging in.

You should be able to see everything with out logging in...I unless I have a setting buggered somewhere. Yes, there are bots on almost non-stop but usually only 1 or 2 at a time. The high view count was at 200ish I think from like 2 or 3 years ago when I got it running and R&T posted on it. Nothing I know of has happened recently...unless it just people are stuck home and willing to read ANYTHING

Seldom poster but I drop in regularly to see that you are doing okay and that there is a hint of progress.

For those of us who have been here (and there and there) since the beginning you almost feel like family or the guy next door having seen so much of your life.

Keep it up you inspire us less talented tinkerers in the shed.

Stay safe in these very strange times.

So, even though I thought it was car time I was mistaken.....its patio time. It's now mostly dug out...I made it 12 ft wide, the "plan"changed to 14ft plus a firepit during the inspection. It needs a retaining wall so that is first and the hole is ready for the footer, hopefully that goes in Tuesday and Wednesday at least a couple rows of block, I think it supposed to rain for about a week after that so it's kind of important that the work at the bottom ofcthectrenck gets finish while there is still a trench. There are also a couple drain pipes in the way....nothing it ever easy it seems.
