I'm thinking it may be a good idea to look in there with a bore scope before taking it apart to see if you can put some pressure on the coolant system and see where its coming from before taking it apart. They have some really neat little bore scopes on ebay for $15 that plug into a smartphone.

$15 plus the $500 I'd need to shell out for a smart phone to replace my flip-phone

Honestly the only way I see to fill the intake runner with coolant is if there's a hole in the runner wall and the only way to fix it is to pull the head so I'm just not seeing a reason to delay.....I just need to fix it.

I got a couple hours in the shop last night and used it to pull the intakes off (because of the common fuel rail and angled injectors they I can't pull just 1). I still can't see anything obvious but I didn't expect to because it is was obvious I would have seen it before I installed the head.

Thursday I'll try to get the cams out and be ready to pull the head Saturday morning and hopefully be re-installing the head the following Saturday. So far the tear-down is going smoothly so fingers crossed I'll come in at closer to 6 hours than the 10 I guessed it would take....but I still need the alternator out of the way so I can get to the timing chain tensioner and that's a bugger.

My thought was it wasn't something obvious as well. Thats why I thought it might be good to see where its coming from before you pull it off. You would still need to pull it off to fix but at least you would know where to look?

That's probably the smart thing to do....I like to just rush in and regret it later :o

Once the head is off and the valves out it will be really easy see what's going on. I can just duct tape the head gasket surface shoot soapy water into the port and hit the head water outlet with compressed air....and follow the bubbles to the hole. Hopefully it's not rear the guide where I can't weld without removing the guide, but cutting out the guide to fix it is worst case and only adds a few hours to the job. My goal is to have the head repairs this weekend.

....oh shoot...I need to see if I have parts for the mini torch, I'm now remembering just barely finishing up the exhaust port welding and moving on without replacing the collects and gas cups. :?

A little progress last night. I only had about an hour but got the rear headers removed and cam cover off. Under the cam cover I found the cam valley well oiled and draining well which was nice to see...remember way way back I drilled new oil a passages in the block for both feed and return and made the cams which ferrari uses to fee the oil to all the cam bearings and that all lots like it's working properly. Hopefully the head will be off tomorrow morning....if the cams come out without issue.

Today ended up Lana day not ferrari day but she took pity on my in the evening and sent me to the shop for a couple hours......the head is off. I was really worried about the timing cove holding it in place...but no problem. A little under 6 hours total to pull it so thats great. Tomorrow I'll see if I can figure out where the leak is exactly.

Man, you work fast. Good to hear you got that head off in half decent time.

Hopefully there should be no more leaks.

And like I always say "You can do it Marky!!"

Yesterday during tear down I took a few minutes to mark the timing chain and cam sprockets so I can put the cams back exactly the way they were, hopefully without any drama.

Today I found some bar stock to install in place of the cams so the cups and shims will stay right where they belong.

Hole found.....and it's not that small which agrees with the massive leak I had. i got it ground out and ready to weld. The mini-torch is pretty delicate and eats collets and to so extend gas cups. I have 1 of each on hand so hopefully luck is with me today.....we'll find out after lunch.

Welding in port really sucks. I just couldn't get the weld to flow the way I'd expect it to.......but the port is fixed. I ended up having to knock out the guided, but it came out without any real drama . Time to clean and re-assemble, hopefully if goes back together without any drama.

Hope this is it for problems

John
