The problem was in fact the bucket hitting the cam journal. I'm using 2mm oversize intake buckets and the bucket to bucket distance is also 2mm oversize (to make larger valves fit) so there is not a lot of space let for the journals. What I decided to do was lift a bucket up on each end of the head and measure the total clearance with a dial indicator then adjust the cap so the journals are centered giving me .013" clearance everywhere...which hopefully is enough when things heat up and move.

First head done and ready to install.

Head 2 needed the same cap work and the kids needed to go rollerskating but in spite of all that both heads are now ready to install. It been exactly 20 years since my last just plain stupid engine which was a Harley road racer which clearly they were never intended for and its coming back to me now that the first assembly of a new engine always took 40-60 hours and that was a 2 valve pushrod twin not a 4 valve ohc 12.......so the 20 hours I allotted to get the heads and timing cover done was just plain silly and I spent at least 20 just assembling the heads.....but at least they're done.

I can understand why some of the caps had to be machined what I cannot understand is why you welded a bead on some of them and then machined them?

The caps on the front of the engine set front/back the location of cam and needed to make an adjustment to get the journals on the cams to sit dead center between the buckets in the head. My 2 options where to move the cap dowels which is hard when I don't know exactly where I'm going with them or shave the side of the cap until the cam sat in the right spot which is pretty easy so I chose this option....but once I shave material from one side I had to add it back on to the other side to get the cam end clearance correct again.

I just went in and updated my task list/plan with the extra hours I burned on the heads. It still says the engine will be finished in Feb but the car running date is now mid June. I turn 50 in early June so I've kind of been working toward making a running car my birthday present to me....I need to pick up the pace a bit it seems.
