I was going to buy new wheels, went back and forth with the guy a little....then he blamed the fact that England is in the EU for the pricing .... I can't buy those wheels now and since its my forum I can say I have absolutely no use for right wing nut jobs who blame everyone else for their own problems.



Back in the wheel search days I found 6061 wheels that were being welded together and didn't think it a great idea but they were doing it. I also know people cut and widen/narrow factor wheels. Chopping out the center and putting in a new one doesn't seem any worse.....and I get to have a center that looks exactly how I want it......

hmmmmmm........who besides me thinks welding new 308 looking centers into my 550 wheels is a fine idea?

Before I regained control of my senses and realized Wide 5 stuff is so much cheaper, I was looking at making new wheel centers out of billet to bolt to BBS motorsport rim halves. Probably a pain in the butt to do on manual machinery though; then again, I wonder about lathing the rim bit off of a cast wheel and drilling mount holes for the aforementioned BBS rim halves.

Now we're talking.

Anyone have a CAD model of a 308 wheel?

I found a landrover wheel that has a rim that looks like the 550 and spokes similar to the 308....not bad. Not quite 308 unless I add like a ring between the spokes out at the rim but I'm not sure it wouldn't look pretty 308ish even without the ring added.

I apologize for this awfully paternalistic comment, but aren't wheels something you don't want to "field test" the integrity of? Its not something safe like just a piston coming out of the side of the engine block or something.

Aesthetically, I totally get why you want to change from the 550 rims.

They are only dangerous if the car runs right?

Here's a little refinement. I the first version the hub was dished which probably won't work up front and needs a pretty thick chunk of billet. This one uses a flat center and a spacer on the back to set offset..1" or 1.125" thick billet will do and WAY easier to make. on the equipment I have. I'll need to get real numbers for the front before doing anymore then adjust the rear to be a good cosmetic match I think.

I braved the cold took some supper accurate measurements tonight....hopefully I understand them in the morning
