What's been going on Mark?

Nothing :(

I bought a little dongle think that gives me 12 more analog inputs to the ECU. I was running out of pins as I laid everything out and this will solve that and make the install a little easier. This will mount in the cabin and read the throttle pedal sensors and any buttons/switches I want then send the info to the ECU via the CAN buss so 2 wires to run and I can have 12 inputs.....once I actually have wires to run.

I'm freeing up a bit now at home (still swamped at work for another month or 2) so more shop type action coming soon.

I just learned the 12 channel Analog expansion dongle I orders also does on or PWM outputs on all 12 channel.....my wiring harness just got a lot easier!

So now the plan is ana2 in the cabin:
Pedal signal - AN
pedal track signal - AN
Coolant Fan - on/off
Coolant Temp gauge - PWM
Tach - PWM

I still need to run wires for the CAN buss and the wheel speed sensors, but wire count is way down and adding stuff later is WAY easier. Nice.

The guy that makes this unit is a motec guy which is where I found him....but he's now shopping for an AEM and looking to reprogram it with engine lab the same as me so I may have found some programming help :)

For you V8 guys, the AEM infinity-8h is $1300 on ebay, sometimes they pop up for less.....really good value and fully reprogramable to make it do anything you please.

Isn't the tach variable frequency? Or are you using a MoTeC tach also?

Yes, variable frequeny. To control it I think I just send a PWM that is about a 20% duty cycle and make frequency a function of RPM calculated in the ECU and updated via CAN signal to the ana2.

The temp gauge can be controlled the opposite way I think.....fixed frequency with duty cycle a function of temp. So the ECU reads the sensor, converts to duty cycle then updates the ana2 via CAN so the gauge is reading what the ECU is seeing instead of a separate sensor that may or may not match what the ecu sees.

GM makes a 3 pin sensor. Two pins are 5V supply and signal return. The third is resistance to ground via the sensor housing and meant to drive a "normal" 12V driven temp gauge. I have this unit in my Fiero. The single sensor of course guarantees that the gauge gets its info from the same point as the ECU's sensor. That of course does not guarantee that the two elements read the same OR that the gauge is accurate...

Glad thats working out, let me know when you're up and running!

I wish I could come for the GP but I won't do anything that puts money in Bernie's pocket so no F1 anything for me until he's out. I might try to make it down for something else...2016 motoGP maybe?

Can I ask with respect why you say that with regard to Bernie? F1 was born in the UK and he had the foresight to see that this formula would appeal to a mass audience, whats wrong with that dude, am I missing something? Interesting thread on VW!!...Keep up the good work!

Sure. F1 is the premier auto racing and under Bernie's direction is has become a way for dictatorships to gain entrance into more respectable circles. The Russian GP was the last straw for me, when Russia invited Ukraine MotoGP canceled, F1 cashed the check and help the race. I can't support F1 while behavior like that continues.

Yeah,Bernie is an extortionist and F1 is a bore. BUT!,,Friday practice is pretty good but Sat qualifying is INSANE,,thats when they really drive like madmen..Long list of drawbacks for raceday,1st off there isn't a race,,its over before the 1st lap is done. You can get in for $10 a day and the Challenge race on sat is well worth that. COTA is crazy huge and loaded w/peeps from all over the world. I also go on sat but never again on sun even w/free FCA grandstand seats.
