I bet the starting of this engine will result in a simultaneous explosion of a stockpile of North Korean weapons for no other reason than the universe sees it fit to punctuate a momentous occasion. Mark be sure to put your sunglasses on before you start it so you can look extra cool when Kim Jong Un disintegrates and you are heralded as the savior of the free world. 8-)

LOL

I just finished bolting on the header. This morning I got all the wires and throttle stuff back in place.

I think it's time once again for coolant.......

Well...not exactly.

I wasted a lot of time trying to get the solid state relay I bought for the fuel pump working right. I thought it was a drop-in replacement for a normal really and it ALMOST is. I wasted about 2 hours and gave up and used a normal relay...just like it I was doing before I wasted the 2 hours.

With that functioning again I decide to give the engine a try...but first spark plugs in. Ok, now it's 7:30.....lots of popping noises but no actually running. Ok......I checked a couple things and gave it another try, and the engine locked up. Hmmmmmm......it seems the popping got cylinder 12 leaking :(.

Everything was tight before that, I sat with coolant for 4 hours and I inspected it several times...dry as a bone. Now it leaks. I put spot leak in the coolant as a precaution so it might seal itself......might.......

What I decide was there is no way I'm pulling the engine without knowing if it runs so I pulled the plug and moved on. I tried a couple things quick with no real change. I need to double check what I did with the wiring when I converted to waste spark......I must have something wrong. I'll have a lot tomorrow and give it another try.....maybe the leak will stop....you never know.

This morning before leaving for work I had a look at the coil wires....they were exactly what I thought they were....????....hmmmm. Then I had a look in port #12...only 1/2 full so I guess the barsleaks is working :)

....I still need to fix it of course but I really want to hear it run. Driving to work I realized I don't actually need to pull the engine to pull the front head, just rock it up so more work than pulling the rear head but less than pulling the engine.....but I would like to see why the timing cover is leaking so after is runs I may just pull it out.

Also this morning with a clear head I believe I found what I did wrong with the timing and corrected it so tonight I'll give it another go.

I think I found the problem with the solid state fuel pump relay too.....but I'll leave that for another day.

So...I've been following this project for as long as its existed. Since three forums ago. How many years? And here we are.... Please tell me you will at least set your iPhone on video record or something when this baby turns over on its own for the first time.

I have to say, I think of this when I'm stuck on a project of my own- your determination, patience and ingenuity are an example to all of us garage hacks.

Rooting for you all the way.

Thanks!

It's been about 8 1/2 years now.....

I'll get a video, but it won't be using my phone...which is a flip-phone because they don't break easily. Smart phones are WAY more delicate so I've never been brave enough to risk the money. I've never been able to own a watch either...I always end up destroying them so I stopped trying about 20 years ago. But I'll get a video.

To state the obvious, what you are doing and have already done to that little 308, is extremely difficult. Truly awe inspiring.

Sorry to hear there are gremlins. We are all cheering for you.
