I'll need to sort out how I want to layout the space and see what if anything makes sense. A lift in bay 3 (nearest the house) might work...might.

You need to put up paddock numbers, a la pit row.

At least its not just me who has no concept of how to do a budget and stick to it :)

Lol... Well... I thought you had what Lana thought the building would cost rather than any kind of project budget. If she can do 95% estimates, she could probably make more money than you working as a consultant in the construction industry :P

I had what Lana approved and we both thought it enough.....but that was based on much plainer/simpler examples that really weren't finished. When it started looking the steel building people advertise like $4k for the size I wanted.....wow! Thats cheap!

....and if you have a dead flat lot in a place that never freezes and you don't need hvac or a paved driveway you could put it up for 10-12k. But start adding on grading a foundation, floor that will support equipment, etc and all or a sudden the money you save doing steel doesn't seem worth it.

There will be more money soon and we'll get it done. The real problem were having is mental.....house prices in our neighborhood haven't recovered from the crash and have been flat since 2010 so putting more money into an upside down house is a hard choice. Garages certainly add to value in this area but it already had a garage and there is a diminishing return adding bays so even in a good market this would probaly be a poor use of money....but I need a shop so here we are.

Why do you need to pay someone to draw it up? Looks like you already did? I did mine in 3DHomeDeluxe. I bought trusses and the company I bought the trusses supplied me with truss drawings and included the engineers stamp on the roof design. I just made hand written notations and sketches of the foundation and drew in a few 2x4's along with notations saying things like "bottom plate pressure treated", '2x4 16" on center typical', "double top plate".

I submitted what I did in 3dHome along with the notations and sketches and a copy of the roof truss drawings. They accepted it without any issues. Granted I'm in a different state and county but they are fairly strict here.

Mark, I have the Bendpak 4 post lift with the caster kit. The great thing about the 4 post lifts is they don't have to be bolted down and if you get the caster kit you can move them easily whenever you want. You can even use the lift as an adjustable platform/workbench for projects or as a drywall lift/scaffold for when you forget you didn't put down all the plywood in the loft and fall through the drywall.

The way the caster kit is designed it self lifts even with a car on it. You raise the lift up a foot or so and put in the pins for the 4 casters, 1 on each post. Then when you lower the lift back down it puts pressure on the lever of the caster raising the lift up so you can now roll it around on the casters. Very flexible use, you can even roll it outside on nice days or move it to the house garage.

If you want to drop the engine from the bottom or have unrestricted access to the 308 engine bay you put the car halfway on the lift with the rear tires not on the lift. Put a couple blocks of wood on the frame and raise the lift with the ass end hanging off. I love my 4 post lift. I've looked at other 4 post lifts including Rotary and Challenger but I believe Bend Pak has the best design but you can get cheaper Chinese ones.

If you get back down this way feel free to stop by and you can play around with the lift and the caster kit? Nice thing is no commitment since you can move it anywhere on the whim.

I almost forgot, it also makes a great loading dock! Raise the lift to the height of the truck and roll off motorcycles, lawn tractors, engines or anything else you want and then lower it to the ground. Put a heavy vehicle on the lift and it also becomes a hydraulic press...both deliberately or accidently :)

Thanks Kevin, I'll look into it. I know it would be nice to have, i'm worried about space but the casters would certainly minimize the issue.

I'm trying to talk myself into building a F1000 or d sport or better yet a single car with 2 sets of body work to play in both, then the boat project, and 308 storage once it's done.....i see myself out of space before the construction is even complete:(

I'm seriously thinking the lift lives in the old garage to let me park the 308 above my driver....then the casters let me pull it into the shop it needed maybe......

......but first I need to finish the shop. This weekend i got distracted building a "hoverboard" from leftover garage wood and a leaf blower....older son was literally in shock when he stood on it, pulled the throttle trigger and found himself hovering so it was worth the time.

I'll add this thought....we're trying to decide if there should be a version 2.0 with a lot more power and thrusters of some kind. We're at the point that making better will require spending money so we need a real design to figure out how much money.....but to do a real design we need to decide what we want it to be able to do exactly. I suspect we're done with this but it hard to say for sure....amd I would love an excuse to buy a small jet engine :)

You just need to borrow more leaf blowers! Put 3 or 4 of them on there. Just need to drill more holes. Maybe a bypass system so you can run them all full throttle?
