I also picked up a couple bottles of water wetter

The water wetter bottles says street cars should run at least 15% coolant., that wasn't noted in the white paper they publish....but I bought that the other day so I can make a cocktail I guess. I did read somewhere that the heater core can freeze when the AC is on so maybe that is the reason?

Still cold out here but I need to get stuff done

That's curious about WaterWetter. IIRC, years ago when I first read about WaterWetter, I thought it was said to be either incompatible with or less effective with antifreeze. Now it's recommended to be used with antifreeze. I guess they either learned something new about it or changed the formula...

The white paper says, "Plain water with or without WaterWetter® should not be used in cooling systems
containing magnesium - antifreeze should be used - with WaterWetter®." I have asked Red Line if that includes magnesium in an aluminum alloy. I'll post what I find out.

Thanks.
I saw in a review or tech article concern with the heater core freezing with the AC on...on a 308 that can't happen as they are not co-located but that was a concern and they said 20% coolant for that reason but I just don't know

You could always do what us RVers do. Winterize it when it's going to be really cold. Drain and refill in the Spring. Just a thought.

Bullshit.

If the A/C is functioning correctly, that should not be possible, as the evap won't get below freezing. Evaps that get below freezing are actually a problem as they will ice up and block discharge air.

My dad's V8 Datsun used the old-school DA6 (IIRC) compressor and ended up with a little too much refrigerant, and it would ice up the evaporator... but that's not exactly working correctly.

Also, even if the evaporator were below freezing, there is ZERO chance of bringing 195 degree coolant down below 32 degrees in a single pass using HVAC discharge air. *MAYBE* a car that does not have a full-flow heater core would be more susceptible to this, but that's lining up a whole lot of unlikely events.

I @$$ume the 308 uses a full-flow heater core like GM cars do. I know the E30 and E34 BMWs (and probably most similar vintage BMWs) control the heater core flow with solenoid valves, but that's extra complexity of the kind Germans love, while building a full-flow heater core is simple.

Honestly I'm not even sure I want to put the engine back in, it looks so pretty sitting on the bench and some work popped up this morning so it will sit a bit longer than planned

It does look amazing. You know, you could find a local photographer via something like Craigslist. A "mini session" of about 30 minutes is usually $150-300, and you could get a couple of nice, high-res photos with the composition and lighting done well. If all goes well, it won't be this this ready for glamor shots ever again.

It could be, read it somewhere but not from redline so no idea why the bottle says street cars need 15% coolant

The 308 uses 2 heater cores mounted on front wheel wells and their it a manually controlled valve that throttles coolant flow...but being out on the wheel well clearly the AC has no impact on them

Really? The f'in helicoil pulled out?

2 hours later.....

Love it. I was kind of excited when I saw the first post - I was looking forward to seeing how you would fix it. :)

And I guess we all should have known you were bluffing about leaving that pretty motor on the bench.

Amazing work, as always. Thanks for sharing!

It just delay after delay. Yesterday I got little done, alternator, oil pump, bolts in the motor mounts. The new engine height looks pretty good. But I couple unfinished things from work nibbling time and questions about a new 3d printer eating time...comparing specs, where will it live, size vs resolution vs price vs budget with no clear definition on any of them.

Back in the shop now though, time for axles

Got the exhaust pipe in and a few other things and put the charger on the battery thinking tomorrow should be the day.
